Jim Woodring creator of the surreal and wordless strip Frank has just accepted a Genius award for Literature from free Seattle based arts and culture newspaper The Stranger. Of course some people have taken offence to the fact that not only is he a comic artist(*1), but there are no actual words in his books! So how can it be literature?

(*1) I'd like to think this is a view that is on it's way out, the recent spout of good reviews for graphic novels worldwide shows that the world is ready to accept that comics can be literature too.
