I've just found some experimental short animations by God of
Manga Osamu Tezuka on YouTube.
Memory (from 1964) is my favourite, as it mixes lovely flat colour and simple line drawn backgrounds (which remind me of the modernist almost jazzy style of animation which was popular in America with classics such as
Gerald McBoing-Boing), photo collage, great cartoon sound effects, and its
tongue planted firmly in its cheek. The second short,
Push (1987) is less visually experimental than the first but has a simple but effective message about greed, consumerism, and the price the world will have to pay.
